When it's also a beer event, of course!
July's GRSec meetup will be Wednesday, 7/23/08. The reason for the Wednesday date is two-fold. First, Tuesdays don't work for everybody, so we're switching it up over the summer to see if we can get some fresh faces out to GRSec. Second, this month we're at the new Graydon's Derby Station, and that particular evening, they will be tapping a cask of Victory Hop-Devil IPA.
If that's not enough reason for you to be there, then I don't know who you are anymore, man! I don't know you at all...

It was 20 years ago today... (minus 19)
This time last year, I decided to act on my idea to steal Matasano's idea for an informal meetup for infosec practitioners, proselytizers, patrons, and partygoers. And while I can take credit for something that boils down to, "Hey, who likes beer and security? Then let's go to the bar!", I can't take credit for all of the awesome conversation and fascinating stories from some of the best and brightest infosec minds in the midwest or anywhere for that matter.
But that's what GRSec has become. I've been to most of the 12 meetups, and I've had a good time with and learned from others at each one. And so I want to extend a genuine thank you to everyone who's come out to a GRSec.
If you're in the Mid- or West Michigan area and want to network and talk shop with other infosec types, I encourage you to join us for GRSec. Or if you're in another geoloc, check out CitySec.org and find a meetup in your area.

On a Lighter Note...
Say what you will about Bill Gates, but sometimes he does something that you just have to admire. According to Reuters, he's recently acquired a stake in FEMSA Cerveza, a Mexican beer and soft-drink conglomerate. Mexican beers don't often make it to the top of a beer snob's list, but for my taste, Bohemia is one of the better pilsners out there. Plus, it's usually cheaper than, say, Pilsner Urquell. And cheap beer is good beer when it's also good beer.

Playing Catch-Up
Did you know that it's possible to overwhelm a Treo be simply ignoring your e-mail for two weeks? :-) Now you do.
OK, first of all I want to get some thank-you's out. Thank you to Jeff Moss and the Black Hat staff for putting on an amazing conference. Thank you to OWASP, Microsoft, and especially Don Donzal and EthicalHacker.net for buying the bar. Thanks (and congrats!) to the 1@stPlace guys for hanging out Thursday night. It was great to meet you all and nice job on your 2nd consecutive win! Oh, and thank you to Dateline producer Michelle Madigan for sending me home from Vegas with a story I could tell to people that don't grok '%48%45%58'.
And second, here are my pictures. All taken with my Treo, so they pretty much look horrible.

June GRSec Announced
GRSec will be getting together over the summer as promised. Note the move to Tuesday night. I've heard from several people that Wednesdays and Thursdays don't work. So we're looking forward to some new faces. Hope to see you there!

March GRSec - It's On Like Donkey Kong!

GRSec Blog Online
The GRSec Blog is now online and very much empty. I will be posting pictures from the first meetup as well as information about upcoming meetups here. I'm also looking for a volunteer or two to co-moderate/co-author this blog. It won't be much work, but you never know, I might take a vacation or something.

ToDo: RSVP by 2/19 if you can. If you don't RSVP, come anyway.
GRSec is a new social gathering for people involved in or interested in information security. Come talk shop with, rub elbows with, or buy drinks for other information security professionals. Connect with other people in your industry in your local area. There is no set topic or agenda. Just show up, ask questions, float ideas, or shoot the breeze.
GRSec is not an ISSA sponsored event. In fact, it's not sponsored at all, it's a casual meetup. However, ISSA members are invited to attend and encouraged to invite others who like information, security, beer, or cheese-stuffed pretzels. Despite the name, GRSec does not imply that you live or work in Grand Rapids, it only implies that you are willing to travel to Grand Rapids to hang out with infosec types.
If the first meetup is well-attended, we will try to make this a monthly thing, perhaps even over the summer (when there are no ISSA meetings and the patios are open!). So also bring suggestions for meeting locations and help get the word out.
